Our World of Water
Bringing Watershed Education to Your Classroom
Our World of Water is an in-school program that is designed for grades 4 through 6 and correlates with MEAP Science Objectives for Hydrosphere, Scientific Method and more!
This program will be provided for a fee of $100 this year.
Program Format
The program is divided into four 45 minute teaching units, each set up in a separate classroom or location. Up to four classrooms will be rotated through each teaching station. Each presentation will be repeated up to four times, or until all classrooms have participated in each presentation.
- Station #1 – The Water Cycle Skit & The Scientific Inquiry
Students will trace their drinking water from its source to their faucets by participating in a water cycle skit. Students will conduct an experiment using the scientific method to determine the impact of a common household product on water quality. Students will be introduced to the following vocabulary words and concepts:
Research
Trial
Hypothesis
Data
Predict
Results
Experiment
Consistent
Control
Conclusion
Variable
Theory
- Station #2 – The Watershed, What is it? How do we Protect it?
With the help of a surface water run off model, the students will learn the definition of watershed, what watershed they live in, and how their own daily activities affect water quality in the watershed. They will also review the parts of the water cycle.
- Station #3 – Pour-A-Pond Discovery
During this hands-on activity, students will discover the diversity of organisms found in the aquatic environment. They will test their observation skills as they identify and classify these interesting organisms. They will see that people are not the only living things that depend on clean water.
- Station #4 – Ground Water, What is it? How did it get there? How do we use it? How do we protect it?
Using a ground water model, students will learn about ground water, wells and how they work. They will be able to see how water and/or pollutants travel underground. They will be introduced to vocabulary words and concepts such as ground water, aquifer, water table, point source pollution and more.
